Kiosk in Five Languages and with Greatest User Simplicity and Scheduling Flexibility

Client's Request:
To develop and manufacture a customized and flexible ticketing kiosk for general admission in recreation centres.

KLN's Contribution:
Conceptual and detailed mechanical design, systems integration, software development, manufacturing of all parts, assembly, test, installation and training.

Outcome:
After only six months of intense work, the ticketing kiosk was designed, manufactured and installed at the Newton Wave Pool in Surrey, B.C. The kiosk comprises computer, coin acceptor, coin changer, bill acceptor, full colour LCD display, combined coin and ticket exit, and backlit advertising sign. Furthermore, it is ready to be expanded to take credit and debit card payments. The kiosk has several safety features including continuous monitoring of the kiosk's door and presence of the coin and bill cassette. It creates audit trails and logs for events and transactions, and produces detailed reports for end-of-day and accounting procedures. And it accommodates complicated and varying schedules with ease.

Additionally to the kiosk, KLN designed and fabricated special turnstile locking mechanisms with an integrated bar code reader, so that the turnstiles only open when being presented with a valid ticket. Immediately thereafter the ticket becomes invalid.

Most compelling is the simplicity and ease of use when purchasing tickets. The opening screen allows the choice of five languages (English, French, Spanish, Mandarin and Punjabi) and once the language is chosen the kiosk shows only those activities that are being offered at that moment. Then, after the activity is picked the kiosk brings up only the age groups allowed for that specific activity, requesting to enter in each age group the number of people wanting to use the facility. It then searches for the best possible deal offered and displays it on the screen.
